How do I ask a coworker not to apply perfume all day at work?

I have read several of the posts about asking people not to wear perfume…I use Allegra, Singular, Flonase and Patanol on a daily basis to combat allergies and chemical sensitivities. I would not say anything to most people, as the amount people wear TO work is usually tolerable. (ie. I don’t swell up and start wheezing)
I have a coworker who applies a fragranced lotion up to 5 times a day. I just moved next to this woman, and am in a new job. It does not ‘stink’ It burns and my eyes and throat swell up, and I cannot hear.
How do I ask this woman politely not to apply fragranced lotion at her desk all day? This woman often tells people that they ‘ought to go buy some Claritin’ so I’m not the only one…I’m just the new person who sits next to her and I need my job!!

The good news is…you don’t have to. It is your employers job to make sure your work environment is not a danger to your health. By law, you have a right to work in an environment that does not cause you physical illness or harm. If the perfume and lotions make you ill, you need to discuss this with your employer and ask that he or she let people in the office know that there are others who suffer from allergies. You have probably been to doctor’s offices or other offices that have signs asking patients or workers to refrain from wearing heavy perfumes or lotions. Since it really is your employer’s place to talk with your co-workers, it takes the stress off you. Plus, it helps all the others who have the same problem and have just been too nice/scared to bring it up. Good luck. I hope things get worked out for you.
