Aphrodite is the goddess of love and sex. And the word aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite. Back in the ancient Roman and Greek times, the scent of a woman’s armpits was believed to be a natural aphrodisiac. (True story) So along the way, scent, and perfume became related to aphrodisiacs.

Cupid was either the son of Hera or Aphrodite, and he went around shooting people with his gold tipped arrows that made the person hit fall in love with the first person he saw. So when people fell in love, they were believed to have been hit by Cupid’s arrows. There for Valentine’s Day, the day of love, has been connected to Cupid.

Apollo was the Greek god who drove the Sun chariot across the sky everyday. So spacecrafts like Apollo 13, were named after the god.

Narcissus was a wood nymph. I don’t remember her exact story but she was somehow turned into a flower by a jealous god.

The Atlas is the god who holds the earth upon his shoulders. So atlases were named after Atlas.

Another allusion would be cereal and Ceres, the goddess of grain and the harvest.
