Perfume How To Wear

By admin, January 26, 2010 9:20 pm

Why do some people wear so much perfume? For those with allergies, how do you deal with this, in a nice way?

I know scented products are banned from some public places. But there are many other places where a few people seem to drench themselves in scent. Many of these scents make me choke.

How do you convince a co-worker or a neighbor, for example, that this is a real problem, when you have already asked to them not to wear perfume around you, and they don’t take it seriously? They act as though I’m the one who is being difficult. Maybe I am being difficult? What do you think? What can I do, if it’s not possible to avoid being around them?

I put this in the family category because I think it’s similar to negotiating in a relationship, and I know there is lots of wisdom here, judging from the answers I’ve seen.
Kat, others have noticed it, too. I’m a non-smoker.

First of all the man that said that having allergies is a defect is just rude. People are not going to suffer if they can’t wear perfume or cologne….and women are not the only ones guilty of wearing too much. Men do it too. I too suffer from allergies to perfume, cologne, air fresheners and the reaction to those can be unbearable. I start sneezing and my eyes start watering and itching…it’s very similar to having a head cold. I have a woman in my office that wears perfume so strong that you can smell it 3 doors down from her office. I have yet to figure out a way to let an acquaintance know that it is a problem for me….a close friend I have no trouble telling. I do like the idea about an interoffice memo…..people that don’t have allergies do not understand how uncomfortable an allergic reaction can be. Unfortunately I find that I sometimes just have to leave the environment. You might want to make sure that person sees how severely their perfume affects you and if they ask you what is wrong just let them know that you are allergic to their perfume. Sometimes people don’t understand until they see the reaction first hand.
