May Day! May Day! Mother's Day is 11 May!

For many of us, even avid and intrepid buyers, Mother's Day is a special challenge. That's why perfume is a favorite gift. It is luxury, appreciated, and most women love (and rarely buy for themselves).

But navigating the perfume counter can be a challenge for novices and people who do not know much about the smell to begin with, can be completely intimidated.

Here's how you can own fragrance counter, even if you never purchases of perfume before. We have seven quick and easy things you have to know to survive this.

1. Perfume never goes on sale. It is never cheap. There has been for sale since the days of Marie Antoinette suggests peasants eat cake, and is very unlikely to go on sale in our lives. It is important to put the search correctly.

2. People at the perfume counter may try to tempt you with carefully packaged gift sets that combine fragrance and shower gel or cologne spray and lotion. Ensure this is the division of the year. Do not laugh, it's true. This is what closer as the fragrance industry is coming to bring you a deal.

3. Perfume comes in different "categories" of most powerful (perfume) to the less powerful colony () and a couple of levels in the medium (water, perfume and toilet water, in that order). However, there are no official standards in the perfume industry so that these degrees are a bit blurred. It's pretty safe "buy water from perfume" (pronounced par-oh-duh-Fahm, sorry there is no English word), and that is high quality, very strong, luxurious, and most preferred perfume genius. If you think your mother would like something lighter and airy, you can move to the toilet water or cologne misnamed. The only thing about these products is that they dissipate more quickly so the smell does not last that long.

4. The way perfume smells like fresh out of the bottle is not the way it smells on your skin. It is designed to have something called "top notes" or misleading little fragrance molecules that come whizzing out of the bottle when you get your first wave. These airy top notes fade in an instant, four minutes is enough standard. What really smells in the long run are the "heart notes". For that reason, it's really not so useful to smell a lot of perfume bottles.

5. There are many groups in gross fragrance families. Great I know are floral and fruity, floral, Oriental (spices), wood (replacing the former name of the family of "chypres" nobody could pronounce anyway), and fresh. The Orientals are spicy odors, but does not consider "hot." Think vanilla, cinnamon, cloves. Timber scents include "green" smells that have nothing to do with being environmentally friendly, including the name of things plants and trees (which geniuses fragrance called "botanicals"), and moss. A brand new trend to hit the big world of fragrances is a group of fragrances called "fresh". It smells very soft, almost like soap or fresh air. As a general rule: floral oriental and are considered "more mature" and stronger; fresh floral and fruity aromas are sporting, sporting, and appropriate for young women (and women who think of themselves as young people); Aromas a timber are sophisticated.

6. Things to tell the person against your mother's perfume to help choose a perfume: perfume preferences known, the general taste and clothing (sports is your mom? Youth? Dramatic? Business Type: Soccer Mom?), and whether or not follow the fashions. If you are interested in fashion, that the salesperson to steer you toward the newcomers in the perfume counter. Believe it or not, the perfume industry has more whims of footwear and perfumes again hit the market more frequently than the increases for news about the Democratic primaries.

7. Try something new. It is tempting to go for the favorite smell of his mother (who is half-sitting unused in her dressing) or more fragrances you know that you like. The perfume is more fun when it's a little exploring. Most mature women on perfume like cats. The type of woman who likes a cat generally likes a variety of cats, including all cats. That's the same with perfume. Perfume people like all kinds of perfume.

But it all comes down to one last time: you will have to make a decision. Contrary to instinct smelling each odor is not going to help much and, unless the person perfumery really smart, empathetic, and underworked, asking for help will not be much of a solution either. Just choose. Choose a fragrance family, finding an agreement (usually a gift set), and make your choice. It's hard to go too wrong.
